How much does landscaping cost? Real ranges, and how to spend less
Landscaping costs anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a weekend of planting to well into six figures for a full outdoor-living build. The ranges below are typical US figures; your region, access, and how much you do yourself move them a lot. What matters more than the numbers is knowing where the money goes.
The headline ranges
A full front-yard redesign with plants, mulch and edging, professionally installed, typically runs $3,000–$12,000. A backyard with a patio, planting and lighting, $10,000–$40,000. Add a pergola, fire feature or outdoor kitchen and $50,000+ is normal. Per square foot, planted beds cost $4–$12 installed; patios $15–$50 depending on material; lawn removal and gravel $3–$8.
Where the money actually goes
Hardscape first — patios, walls, paths and the excavation under them are usually half or more of any big project. Then labour. Plants are rarely the expensive part; large, mature specimens are the exception (a mature tree can be $1,000–$5,000 installed).
Cost by style
Roughly, from cheapest to build: pollinator meadow (seed and patience), desert xeriscape (gravel and a few plants), English cottage (many small plants, little hardscape), Pacific Northwest forest, coastal beach, modern farmhouse (raised beds and edging add up), Mediterranean (an olive tree and stone), tropical resort (big plants and a water feature), Japanese zen (stone, and stone is heavy), modern minimalist (large-format pavers and steel — the most hardscape).
The decisions that cut the bill
Buy small plants; they catch up in three years. Do the planting yourself and pay for the hardscape. Choose a style your climate supports, so nothing has to be replaced. Phase the project — hardscape and trees this year, beds next. And decide the style before you get a quote: contractors price uncertainty.
- Small plants over large: saves 50–70% on the plant bill
- DIY planting and mulch: saves most of the labour on that part
- Gravel instead of pavers where you can: a third of the cost
- One clear picture of what you want: fewer revisions, tighter quotes
Get a better quote by showing, not describing
A landscaper quoting 'a nicer backyard' pads the number. One quoting from a picture of your yard in the exact style you want does not have to. Try a few styles on a photo of your property — the first redesign is free with no account — and bring the one you love to the estimate.
