The low-maintenance backyard: what actually cuts the work

'Low maintenance' is the most-requested and least-delivered thing in landscaping, because most yards are designed for the day they are planted, not for the tenth summer. Here is what genuinely reduces the hours, ranked by how much each one saves.

1. Less lawn

Mowing, edging, watering, feeding, weeding — lawn is a weekly appointment. Every square foot you convert to gravel, a patio, groundcover or a mulched bed is an hour a month you get back. You do not have to remove it all; shrinking a lawn to the part you use is the single biggest win.

2. Fewer kinds of plant, more of each

Twenty different perennials is twenty different care schedules. Five plants massed in drifts is five, and the drifts shade out weeds. Every low-maintenance style in the library — xeriscape, modern minimalist, meadow — is built on repetition.

3. Match the plant to the place

A plant in the right light and soil for your climate mostly looks after itself; a plant in the wrong place is a patient. Pick the style your region actually supports — desert plants in Arizona, ferns in Seattle, prairie in Ohio — and half the maintenance never exists.

4. Mulch deep, edge hard

Three inches of mulch (or gravel in dry climates) stops most weeds and halves watering. A steel or stone edge between bed and lawn stops the grass creeping in, which is the chore people forget to count.

5. Automate the water

Drip irrigation on a timer is the difference between a garden that survives your vacation and one that does not. It also uses less water than a hose, because it puts it at the roots.

The styles ranked by upkeep

Lowest: desert xeriscape (almost none once established), modern minimalist (mow nothing, clip once a year), pollinator meadow (one cut in March). Middle: Mediterranean, coastal beach, Pacific Northwest forest. Highest: English cottage and tropical resort — beautiful, and they will keep you busy.
